On June 15, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), the Sri Lankan Permanent Mission to the United Nations, and Disabled People's International (DPI) will co-host a side event at the Conference of States Parties for the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). How Regional Collaboration Can Lead to More Effective Implementation of Political Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the 2030 Development Agenda will address intra- and inter-regional knowledge sharing among election officials and disabled persons' organizations (DPOs). South-South engagements provide opportunities to empower persons with disabilities to engage in elections and political processes and result in intra- and inter-regional knowledge transfer, sharing best practices and experiences among disability rights advocates, experts, and officials. Focusing on meaningful participation of persons with disabilities in political life, this discussion will expand on the concept of consultation of governments with DPOs and on the role of political life in contributing to realizing Sustainable Development Goal 16 to “promote…accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.”
