Experiences in Rights-Based Development Programming

How does a rights lens change how we approach development challenges? Many donors, implementing agencies and civil society organizations build programming around rights-based approaches (RBAs), which use human rights commitments, as well as domestic laws and policies, to meet development objectives. RBAs attempt to go beyond merely addressing the needs of individuals by empowering citizens as rights-holders and building the capacity of duty-bearers. The organizations that use this approach encounter unique conceptual and operational challenges that help illuminate how applying a rights lens can improve outcomes in sectors ranging from health to gender equality to electoral processes.
Join us for a panel discussion in which development practitioners will share their experiences with RBAs to programming across a broad range of sectors. The interactive conversation ill focus on the practical questions of RBA programming, such as: How do implementers determine when an RBA versus traditional sector programming is appropriate? How explicitly should an RBA focus on rights? How does the management and implementation of RBA programs differ from traditional sector programs? What kind of mindsets are required of program teams? How do we ensure colleagues and stakeholders comfortable with RBAs?
