As part of a miniature series, IFES staff interviewed elected Political Leaders with disabilities throughout Nepal. The first Q&A, highlighting Ujeli BK, which has been lightly edited for clarity, is available below.

What inspired you to become involved in political life?

My prime inspiration is my community who encouraged me to become politician.

Did you encounter challenges as a candidate with a disability? If so, how do you meet and overcome those challenges?

I was associated with different Disabled People's Organizations (DPOs) in my district. I was also one of the member of the then existing ward citizen forum. At the initial stage of my career, I faced many physical and psychosocial challenges. But today, I am actively involved in the disability movement. I therefore did not have to struggle to get candidacy in this election and I am happy about it.

What role do you think politicians can play to support access of persons with disabilities to civic and political rights?

First, persons with disabilities themselves have to be forward to make their own rights real. They have to reach out to politicians with their concerns and demands. On the other hand, if the politicians are sensitive about the rights of persons with disabilities, they will definitely work to overcome the barriers.

Which initiatives to support the rights of women and men with disabilities do you plan to undertake while in office?

I will be focused on each and every issue of persons with disabilities. Besides that, I will make an effort to build an office building for persons with disabilities in my village where they can get information, support etc.

What advice would you share with other persons with disabilities who want to be politicians?

I would like to heartily welcome all in this field and I will be always there to support in whatever ways I can.
